Description
General Tso’s Chicken is a popular Chinese takeout dish featuring crispy fried chicken pieces coated in a sweet and spicy sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
- ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
- ⅓ cup rice vinegar
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 6–8 dried red chilies
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Chopped green onions (optional garnish)
- Toasted sesame seeds (optional garnish)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, coat the chicken pieces in beaten egg, then toss in cornstarch until fully coated.
- Heat 2 cups of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Fry chicken in batches until golden and crispy, about 4–5 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels.
- In a separate pan, heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil over medium heat. Add garlic, ginger, and dried chilies. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour in soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, hoisin sauce, and sesame oil. Bring to a simmer.
- Stir in the cornstarch slurry and simmer until sauce thickens, about 2 minutes.
- Toss fried chicken into the sauce and stir until all pieces are well-coated.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
Notes
- Adjust the number of dried red chilies based on your spice preference.
- For a healthier version, consider baking the chicken instead of frying.
- Serve with steamed rice or vegetables for a complete meal.
